The reflections in this volume are governed by certain personal convictions such as:

People of Indian heritage living beyond the shores of India have a moral responsibility towards their children: to try to develop in them an intelligent sensitivity for the beautiful and enriching elements of India’s glorious past.
2. At the same time, they must have a commitment for the country they have adopted: criticize its inadequacies as insiders rather than as aliens, and also work actively for its betterment.
3. When one chooses to live on a long-range basis away from India, one must also relinquish the right to criticize or condemn Indian politics and society except in the context of expatriates appraising untenable social evils.
